Parsons Public Library will host a book discussion of The Library Book by Susan Orlean at 6 p.m., Monday, April 20. Randee Baty will lead the discussion.

Described as a love letter to libraries, The Library Book uses the unsolved 1986 arson at the Los Angeles Public Library as a starting point to explore the history, evolution and crucial role of libraries in society. The disastrous fire reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more. Orlean investigates the fire, the prime suspect and the broader significance of libraries as community hubs while also weaving her own personal story and the stories of librarians and patrons.

Baty is an English instructor at Labette Community College. She received her master’s degree in English with an emphasis in Literature from Pittsburg State University. Her research interests include Arthurian literature, detective novels and mysteries, Kansas authors and Shakespeare.
